Hello Judy; What a great informative and fun article to read, You covered a lot of ground. If I may mention another artist; Winslow Homer. Of course he also painted in watercolor first and used his paintings as models for larger oils he intended to paint, all along. His oils are great masterpieces. I have always loved his watercolors more. I know a lot of people feel that way, but if you asked 100 people at random, I am sure more would say just in general that oils are the best and oldest, never mind the 40,000 years of watercoloring. Watercolors have jewels of color a fresher less planned look and use layering and overlapping. Those are the reason I love watercolor. There are a lot of great oil paintings for sure, but they attract people who really appreciate size and the tedious minute details, Often overworked these people do not mind it. Watercolors should have the respect that they so well deserve. Both are done by great artists, Both are done utilizing talents for good subject matter, composition, color balance, mixing colors. and then the differences, watercolors: bright transparent, fresh, uses matting and glass, and oils, Sometimes huge, takes longer uses big frames and no glass.
