In my exploration of pattern, I have continued to consider the elements and principles of design. As a refresher, the elements of design are line, shape, direction, size, texture, color, and value. The principles of design describe the way artists use the elements in their art work. The principles’ are balance, gradation, repetition, contrast, harmony, dominance, and unity.

"It's Always Nice to Share" 18x24
The book I have a drawing appearing in is now out and sold by North Light Books. The book is titled “Art Journey Portraits and Figures: The Best of Contemporary Drawing in Graphite, Pastel and Colored Pencil”. It includes some wonderful works of art and I am honored to be a part of it.
The painting I’m describing below isn’t finished but I have high hopes of posting the completed image on Monday. It is always difficult to make painting a priority and almost impossible in December.

Did you ever wonder what color something really is? Or how light or dark an object might be? A thing will look one way and then I put on my glasses and it looks another way. Or someone gets up and moves and the color and value where that person was totally changes. What color was that object, really? [...]

The image on top was before I made a few changes to the main shape and the drinking glass. The image on bottom is my finished 11x13 painting.
AAAUGH! Never Again!
And I really mean, never again! The meticulous detail in the painting above just about drove me crazy. By the time I had painted the table pattern in the same detail as the main subject they were all fighting for attention. My eye didn’t know where to look. I ended up covering the salt, pepper, cruet, and glass shapes with tape and spraying everything else with an atomizer. [...]

Here is my finished painting done from a notan value sketch. It is of Dresden, Germany, 18x24 with both transparent and opaque watercolor.
Below is a detailed, mixed media painting, with pattern on which I am working. The plan is to get it finished and do another, hopefully more creative, pattern painting that I will post next week.
